Yass or Pass: Color Gloves
My friend Emma, bless her heart, wore an orange FootJoy glove on a trip to Palm Springs last year. A beginner golfer, she hadn’t yet been told that wearing anything other than a white glove is how you get laughed off a first tee (which therefore makes it a great strategy for hustling dudes in a skins game, doesn’t it?). But you know what? It looked amazing and I think about it frequently. It added a punch of color to an earth toned outfit in a way that a sprinkle of Tajín livens up a boring old hunk of fruit.
Fast forward to this year: while collecting photos for the Mother of Golf Instagram account, I became aware of a rich history of color gloves in women’s golf. Renee Powell, Chako Higuchi, Judy Rankin, Sandra Haynie, Sandra Palmer, Jane Blalock, and others have all worn them in competition.
Seeing Emma and these record-setting players look fabulous in color gloves had me regretting the fact that I’d wasted so many years wearing only white gloves in an effort to be taken seriously by the men who make the written and unwritten rules regarding everything from the game itself, to the clothes we wear while playing it. So color gloves get a yass from me. I just bought my first—light pink, to double the shock value.
